Studio b Camera contest

I have been a busy bee gathering marketing ideas and materials for my 2011 business plan. I'm designing my new website. My sweet sis-in-law with artistic talent and skills, the owner of successful blog http://ikeslife.blogspot.com/, Emily, is designing the banner for me and I've been digging into my old programming skills. I can't wait to have the website up!

I wish all of you happy new year and wanted to let you know Studio B's camera photo event & contest:

Deposit checks with Droid Phone

Hubby just informed me a good news.

The Chase banking app lets you deposit checks by taking a photo of them!!!!
No need to take the rent checks to the bank for the ATM anymore.

They launched the app for IPhone a while ago. I can't believe it took them a half a year to get Droid on board but hey, I'm grateful that they finally did.

Off to get the app!

Blaine gets national spotlight

Blaine was nominated to be one of the names you need to know in 2011 by Forbes.
Of course I'm excited about what it will do to the real estate in this region.

Names You Need to Know in 2011: Blaine, Washington

Looking from Peace Arch Park toward Blaine ove...

This post is part of an ongoing effort to crowd-source a repeating feature in Forbes magazine entitled Names You Need to Know. We are looking for the people, places, products and ideas that will have significant impact in the near future. Join the ongoing conversation here.
Here’s my nomination: Blaine, Washington. It’s the most strategically important 4,000 population city you never heard about–but will.
Sitting at a northwest corner of Washington State, the city has two vital land border crossings with Canada as well as rail and a harbor (pictured) that leads to the Pacific Ocean. That puts the city–home to the busiest border traffic west of Detroit– front and center in the escalating fight against escalating terrorism from abroad.  In clear anticipation of trouble–Seattle and its defense industries like Boeing sit just 110 miles to the south–the U.S. government is spending tens of millions building a state-of-the-art port-of-entry facility in Blaine to try and keep out bad people and bad stuff.
Meanwhile, scores of financial services industry types–also not all on the up-and-up–have set up shop in Blaine due to its proximity to Vancouver, B.C., 30 miles to the north  and still a thriving center of fraud.  These aiding and abetting newcomers have found a hospitable environment in Blaine, whose economy and culture long was based on smuggling and the wrong side of the law.
If you’re into trivia, Blaine is also the home of one of the few monuments in the world commemorating the Treaty of Ghent. What, you slept through that lesson in history class? The pact between the U.S. and England, named after the Belgium city where it was signed,  ended the War of 1812, a conflict that centered largely on U.S.-Canada border issues. In 1921 the 68-foot-high Peace Arch was built right on the line. The border-straddling arch and the surrounding Peach Arch Park are tourist attractions.
All proving, as someone once said, that wherever there’s a border, there’s money to be made.

Hand Crank Films

I met Sarah and Max with their adorable kids at an open house I hosted and I instantly clicked with them. Max looked familiar and I finally figured out he directed St. Joseph commercial that made Ella a super star. :)

You can only imagine how delighted I was to be invited to their home to help them value their house to sell. Their home really reflected their personalities. It had such a warm and genuine feeling to it and Sarah's kitchen makeover was amazing. I hope to help them put their lovely house on the market in the spring.

But, for now I want to talk about Hand Crank Films, which Max founded.

I get really giddy when I find an awesome local business like his in Bellingham. That makes me even more proud to be a Bellinghamster. I just read an article about his firm in Puget Sound Business Journal. Here is the full story. Check it out!

I really loved Max's tips for success because lately I have given a lot of thought to investing in outside marketing to push my real estate business to the next level in this tough market. Maybe it is the sign that I should.

Hand Crank’s Max Kaiser explains his tips for success.

1. Build projects on meaning rather than price: We’ve always succeeded most when we’ve concentrated on meaning, or telling our client’s story to the best of our ability, regardless of price.

2. Double down in a bad market: A downturn in the economy is a great (though admittedly scary) time to make investments in your processes, your infrastructure, and your people.

3. The importance of good people: Some companies don’t realize that their brand is an extension of their culture. And that culture is defined by what happens inside the company. So hiring the right people isn’t a luxury, it’s an imperative
